Last week in New York the UN Secretariat held frank discussions with the Governments of Gabon and of Equatorial Guinea.
The purpose of these talks were to resolve disputes going back to the 1970s regarding Mbanie', Cocotiers and and Congas Islands and other common areas.
The recent talks focused on Mbanie'. This island has plentiful deposits of Petroleum and has been the focus of talks since 2003. Discussions regarding this issue ramped up during the last days of the Omar Bongo Administration.
The goal of the United Nations is to ultimately submit this dispute to the International Court of Justice where the final adjudication will take place and proper ownership determined.

La semaine dernière à New York, le Secrétariat General de l'ONU a tenu des discussions franches avec les gouvernements du Gabon et de la Guinée équatoriale.
Le but de ces entretiens était de résoudre les différends remontant aux années 1970 concernant les îles Mbanié, Cocotiers et Congas et d'autres espaces communs entre les deux pays.
Les récents pourparlers étaient axés sur Mbanié. Cette île contient d’abondants gisements de pétrole et fait l'objet de négociations entre les deux pays depuis 2003. Les discussions concernant cette question furent accélérées pendant les derniers jours de l'administration Omar Bongo.
L'objectif des Nations Unies est de soumettre en fin de compte ce différend à la Cour Internationale de Justice, où la décision finale aura lieu et l’appartenance de cette île déterminée.
Plus d’information à venir, vu que le Gabon soit l'un des 10 membres non-permanents du Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU
